12 Days of Thanksgiving Break (Part 1)

November 12, 2017
"12 Days of Thanksgiving Break (Part 1)"

In another week, our area school systems will release the kiddies back to their parents for an entire 5 days out of school for Thanksgiving Break. When I was in grade school (a mere) 15 years ago, we would receive an early-release day on the Wednesday before the holiday, then the Thursday and Friday off. The whole week is new to me, but makes sense; as a college instructor, I recall negotiating with many of my students each quarter for their late work after they “unexpectedly” took a vacation the whole week of Thanksgiving.

My, how jealous I am of a full week off, even if school started on July 31 this year.

However, as a mother with my first child in Pre-K, my principal worry is what to do with him so that Jrue can both experience a deserved “break,” with spurts of action and participation, but not interrupt my workdays, as I have come to view my office on many days as a hub of reprieve from the kids.

In light of this development, I find myself attempting to plan for the mischief my son and daughter may bring home. I have 12 strong possibilities that may be best presented similarly to the tune of the Christmas carol “The Twelve Days of Christmas.”

Rock with me.

On the first day of their break, my children sent to me:

A full day of tears and boredom.

On the second day of their break, my children sent to me:

Two upset stomachs and a full day of tears and boredom.

On the third day of their break, my children sent to me:

One lost sippy, two upset stomachs, and a full day of tears and boredom.

On the fourth day of their break, my children sent to me:

Jai eating soapsuds, one lost sippy, two upset stomachs, and a full day of tears and boredom.

On the fifth day of their break, my children sent to me:

Non-stop watching “Sing,” Jai eating soapsuds, one lost sippy, two upset stomachs, and a full day of tears and boredom.

On the sixth day of their break, my children sent to me:

“I don’t want to eat,” non-stop watching “Sing,” Jai eating soapsuds, one lost sippy, two upset stomachs, and a full day of tears and boredom.

On the seventh day of their break, my children sent to me:

Out-of-nowhere vomit, “I don’t want to eat,” non-stop watching “Sing,” Jai eating soapsuds, one lost sippy, two upset stomachs, and a full day of tears and boredom.

On the eighth day of their break, my children sent to me:

Kissing many boo-boos, out-of-nowhere vomit, “I don’t want to eat,” non-stop watching “Sing,” Jai eating soapsuds, one lost sippy, two upset stomachs, and a full day of tears and boredom.

On the ninth day of their break, my children sent to me:

Cars around the house, kissing many boo-boos, out-of-nowhere vomit, “I don’t want to eat,” non-stop watching “Sing,” Jai eating soapsuds, one lost sippy, two upset stomachs, and a full day of tears and boredom.

On the tenth day of their break, my children sent to me:

Books off the shelf, cars around the house, kissing many boo-boos, out-of-nowhere vomit, “I don’t want to eat,” non-stop watching “Sing,” Jai eating soapsuds, one lost sippy, two upset stomachs, and a full day of tears and boredom.

On the eleventh day of their break, my children sent to me:

Fighting over cell phones, books off the shelf, cars around the house, kissing many boo-boos, out-of-nowhere vomit, “I don’t want to eat,” non-stop watching “Sing,” Jai eating soapsuds, one lost sippy, two upset stomachs, and a full day of tears and boredom.

On the twelfth day of their break, my children sent to me:

Two sleeping gremlins, fighting over cell phones, books off the shelf, cars around the house, kissing many boo-boos, out-of-nowhere vomit, “I don’t want to eat,” non-stop watching “Sing,” Jai eating soapsuds, one lost sippy, two upset stomachs, and a full day of tears and boredom.

Tell me now: Will I make it? A better question: What type of survivalist equipment should I invest in? Should I desert all hope? Is that easier?

See part 2, coming Wednesday, November 29.
